When I opened the box and put my coffee maker together I noticed that the double pod holder could not be used. When I tried to close the lid to seal the coffee pods for brewing, the lid did not cover the pods, so I was unable to latch and seal for brewing. I kept the coffee maker and only use it for single pod making because I paid very little for the unit and really that is all I need for right now.

The Krups Home Cafe brewer is one big leap in quality from the Black and Decker version. The B & D was the first pod machine I bought. Though easy to use and producing a nice brew, the cheaply made B & D was dead in the water almost a year to the date I bought it.
Krups has long been known for making fine products. I bought mine new for $100 but if you look on Amazon, E-Bay, Bizrate, etc, you can sometimes get it cheaper and even with low or free shipping.
The Krups is much sturdier that the B & D. It isn't cool looking like the Senseo, but that doesn't matter to me. What I like about it is that it has passed its first year with flying colors. It produces a fine brew and just before the end of the cycle, it froths the coffee which produces a great taste and aroma, just like in your favorite coffee house. This is a wonderful product for its price and I am glad each morning when I sip my coffee that I made the right choice.

I'm not a coffee snob...I just like what I like. I hate Starbucks (bitter), but I'll tolerate McDonalds coffee (not bitter). My coffees of choice...Seattle's Best(SB)...Peet's...Deidrich's...to bad Starbucks owns 2 of them now.
Anyway, this unit isn't bad. It is big. I really didn't need the ability to make 2 cups at one time, but I did want to make more than a thimble sized cup of coffee for my So. Cal commute. I had the Black and Decker GT300. I was using the Presto MyPod with SB or Peets coffee in it. Not as good as my Cuisinart Drip coffee maker, but strong enough. The GT300 had the ability to make a 14 oz cup (acutally about 10oz with a ton of steam). The MyPod held about 12-14 grams of coffee. The one thing that I liked was the coffee was hot...real hot. Even after some half and half, I still had to be careful on that first sip.
The the GT300 stopped making coffee (after 2 years) and I only paid $15 at Target on clearance so no complaints.
So I read the reviews on this unit and got one at Tuesday Mornings for $50. So, finally, my impressions.
1) As for the lever being tight...people, please...work out a little. So it is a little tight, it's holding back hot water under pressure. It really isn't that tough. As for splattering coffee...get the mug closer to the spout. If you are using 3" tall cups, go get a Senseo and enjoy the tiny cups it makes. Keep things in persective.
2) My first 12 oz cup was with Melitta Filterpads with SB, These things only hold about 5 grams and are a pain to fill. I used a pod in each holder and made a 12 oz cup. That means each pod got 6 oz of water. Weak...Weak...Weak. I also noticed that the temperature of the coffee wasn't that hot.
3) I descaled my brand new unit to see if it would help my temp problem. I ran the machine and the next cup of coffee was only 150F (same as before). After some cream, I had to dump my coffee back into a measuring cup and then into the microwave (my travel mug is metal on the outside).
4) I just received my new Perfect Pod Maker. I made a few 10oz pods. This thing is cool to play with and super easy to use.
5) Made a 12oz cup and the flavor was much improved. But the temperature is still only 150F. I think the GT300 coffee was Actually stronger in flavor and it was hot. I'll keep trying...maybe I'm just not seating the pods well enough.
I really wanted to like the Krups, but I just can't. I am using almost 2 times the coffee, pods that are more expensive than the Presto Pod filters and get luke warm coffee...well you get the message. Does anyone know if you can increase the temperature on this unit???

Single-serve coffee is the way to go in home coffee making. The Krups1010 does a good job and at the price paid ($50) is an excellent value. Coffee temperature is just a bit less than I prefer and the lock-down lever is somewhat annoying, but certainly not a deal-buster. Can use Home Cafe and Senseo coffee pods that are available at many stores selling grocery items--Amazon coffee subscription service offers best deal. Overall, this is a good buy when compared with the quality/cost ratio for other single-serve coffee makers, including the excellent Keurig, and I recommend it to intersted buyers.

I picked up one of these cheap from a Tuesday Morning store: $49. Mainly to give my wife the choice of making her own decaf for the next nine months!
It's a study machine and relatively easy to use. It heats up from cold in around a minute and brews a cup in about another minute more. The water tank is easy to fill, either in the machine via a hose or by pulling the tank. The charcoal filter is a nice feature but you'd probably be filtering your water anyway if you're that worried about it. My only complaint thus far is the latch that clamps the lid closed is VERY stiff. When you slide the lever it's spinning a clamp that closes on the pods. I'm hoping it'll loosen up a bit over time.
Most pod machines don't make as strong a cup of coffee as I'd like and this one's no exception. It's a little weak compared to the rocket fuel I've been making in my drip machine. But I'm guessing that has more to do with how I make my coffee and not really the drip machine. I'm going to try a few different brands of pods to see how they compare on strength. Given the amount of coffee used I'm reasonably certain the 1010 is making it appropriately strong. If I used the same small amount of coffee in a drip machine I'm guessing it would be weaker than I'd like. I'm not making this as an excuse for the pod machines just an explanation. I think some of us have really been overdoing how strong we make our coffee! Fortunately this machine makes another cup quite easily! I'm guessing my coffee consumption is going to go up a bit...
So, it's a nice machine that does a good job and can be found on sale for a terrific price. See if your local TM has one and give it a try.
