low profile blade = great for spices December 4, 2008 William Ty Paz-kaiser (Hastings-On-Hudson, NY United States) I have had my Bosch grinder for over ten years. I cook frequently. I have also worked in the restaurant industry for over 25 years. (and most of the great kitchens I have worked in have a Bosch) The manufacturing precision, the angled grinding bed, etc all make for a great machine, but it is the low profile of the blade that makes this particular model ESSENTIAL for the home cook/chef. Look around the next time you are in Williams-Sonoma, or Target, and notice how far the blades of all other grinders sit from the grinding bed. The low profile blade means you can grind smaller batches of spices...e.g. cumin seed, or coriander seed, or fennel seed, esp. mustard seed are all very small seeds...so a low profile blade = smaller batches= less waste. Having ground spices sitting around just lets the flavor dissipate, which is why one wants a spice grinder in the first place. Buy the Bosch!
The best grinder I've ever had....But. December 4, 2008 LuLu (ST. JOSEPH, MO) I used this guy for nearly a year and it performed flawlessly (I even had to use it to make powdered sugar out of regular sugar and it did it in seconds, seriously)...But the lid got dropped, from about waist level, it cracked..A month or so later it got dropped again and split in half.. I can deffinitely recommend this grinder of you're very careful and don't drop the lid...It's the only cheap thing about it.
The best out there! January 11, 2007 B. Lockhart (Charlotte, NC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bosch continues to make affordable and technically superior products. This grinder is no exception. It's quiet and can handle the most superior beans. Don't think twice about the generic brands, you'll end up buying another one in a year. Bosch is the best bet
Great for the money December 5, 2006 MercyStreet (Austin, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As other reviewers stated, this grinder is quieter and more powerful than most in its price range. The slant blades produce an even grind, and quickly. I'm pleased with the capacity -- in one go, I can grind enough for 4-5 cups of strong coffee. And it's small enough to tuck away when you're not using it. I haven't tried spices in it, but I've used it daily for coffee for two-and-a-half-years, and it still works like new. Occasionally I run uncooked rice through it to sharpen the blades. Other reviewers commented on it being messy and the lid not fully sealing ... honestly this hasn't been a real problem for me, as long as I give it a few taps before I take off the lid. Sure, it drops a speck here and there on the counter -- but isn't that just something that happens when you grind your own beans? I've also had zero trouble wiping it clean ... the bottom under the blades is smooth & curved, so stubborn bits will slide right out if you run a rag around it. And, in my experience it's been totally safe: the blades automatically stop when the lid comes off. You could probably find something more high-tech, but for the money, this is a great product.
Outstanding Value / Product August 2, 2005 William J. Wischmann (Hanover, PA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is our first Coffee Grinder and did not know much about them except what feedback other's have wrote here. We decided on this Bosch Unit. This grinder simply rocks !! Very simple operation, just remove the lid, add the beans and place the lid back on it and depress the small button and away it goes, we have been grinding our beans very fine and we have it down to a science, we add just enough beans to use for 10 cups of Kona Coffee, and when it is done, just wipe it clean, that simple. This unit is built well, the blades appear very solid and not cheaply made. Would I recommend this Coffee Grinder, YES ! I do not think you can find a better built unit that is priced right .....
