5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!   October 24, 2008

although i've used slow cookers for years, the cuisinart csc-400 cooks food perfectly & is a good-looking piece of merchandise as well! you can use the cuisinart's timer or not -- i've cooked with it off & on. if you do use the timer (up to 8 hours), the food stops cooking when the predetermined hour has been reached, & does keep the food warm until you're ready to eat. my previous experience was with rival's slow cooker, which developed interior cooking pot cracks & exterior burnt black scum. the quality of rival's cooking also varied, even when i was just cooking a piece of chicken. i highly recommend the cuisinart: it's truly superb!

3 out of 5 stars Automatic pressure cooker is better   October 4, 2008

This is a review of this Cuisinart slow cooker as a cooking appliance, not a comparative rating comparing slow cookers.

I also own an automatic-timed pressure cooker, purchased on Amazon. There were so few recipes for automatic pressure cookers, and so many recipes for crock pots, that I thought I needed this as well.

Here's the result:

10/4/08--chicken in tomatoe sauce

Taste--pressure cooker wins, hands down. Pressure cookers lock in the aroma, creating better tasting food
Time Savings--pressure cooker again wins, hands down--much faster, and can brown right in the pressure cooker; whereas slow cooker requires browning in another pan. Slow cooker's cooking sometimes requires cooking outside cooker because slow cook by itself doesn't kill enough bacteria.
Convenience--pressure cooker again wins. Don't have to wait 5+ hours to eat. My automatic pressure cooker also has timer settings better than this crock pot.
Variety of foods--slow cooker appears to be able to cook a wider variety of foods. There are far more numbers of cookbooks.
Price--automatic pressure cooker costs significantly more, but well worth it.

This particular model has only an 8 hour clock, and I noticed many slow cooker recipes require a 10 hour, sometimes 12 hour cooking time.

For your money, get an automatic pressure cooker first. The primary disadvantage of an automatic pressure cooker is lack of recipes. This is different from a standard pressure cooker, which requires tending.

I'll post more cooking review as I try the slow cooker more.

10/6/08 fruit cobbler--crock pot did probably better than pressure cooker could have done (never tried w pressure cooker). Pressure cooker would have required more liguids. Regular oven could have made fruit cake, and don't think crock pot can.

10/10/08 chili w beef and chicken and kidney beans

Not bad, but pressure cooker would taste better.
Convenience--pressure cooker wins, because Cuisinart required many ingridents to be precooked in a seperate pan.

10/22/08

Onions-- more convenient than automatic pressure cooker, which requires browning onions firs.
Meats and poultry-- pressure cooker is superior because don't have to cook on an external pan first. Also pressure cooker tastes better.
Beans-- pressure cooker cooks these slightly better.
Fish--about equal.
Anything that crumbles in high heat (e.g. veggies, desserts)-- slow cooker probably will work better.
Anything that doesn't taste good with some degree of liquids-- slow cooker will probably taste better.

1 out of 5 stars Not AT ALL worth the price!   July 11, 2008

Don't waste your money on this slow cooker or any other Cuisinart product as far as I'm concerned. I used this slow cooker about 5 times and didn't find that it worked any better than the cheap ones. I would have used it more, but the entire bottom of the ceramic insert cracked into a million pieces while I was cooking my dinner. Luckily I was home and a major disaster was avoided. I called the store where I bought it and was told that cuisinart would no longer take returns from them and that I would have to call the company myself. I called Cuisinart was was told that they would be happy to replace the insert for free. I stated the entire inside of the cooker had baked on black burned pork loin gravy in it and since I could not submerge the unit, I couldn't clean it. They said they would replace the whole unit if I shipped it to them and paid for the shipping there and back. That would have cost me around $60...I only paid ninety for the whole thing. That was the only solution that had for my defective slow cooker.

This will be the last item I purchase from Cuisinart. I am an avid cook and own a few of their products and I have not been inpressed with any of them! My advice...STAY AWAY FROM CUISINART!

4 out of 5 stars Lot's of great features   May 10, 2008

I did my homework on shopping for a quality smallish (4 Quart) cooker. This is good looking, has an 8 hour timer, retractable cord, 3 heating levels and cuts to warm when the cooking time has been reached. It's easy to clean, and great for 1-6 person meals...a tad pricey & the stainless steel shell can get hot (which was expected!) but in this case it is worth it.

We've enjoyed about a half dozen meals in this cooker. Everything has come out perfectly. Would recommend to any couple or single professional.
