Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Barista grade control for a variety of coffee grinds. The removable bean hopper holds 1/2 a pound of coffee beans. The motor drives the bottom burrs and the top plate is stationary. The distance you position them apart precisely determines grind size. The easy-to-read settings allow for grind choices from ultra-fine for Turkish coffee to large and coarse for percolators.

2 out of 5 stars Great grinder, but it makes a MESS   January 4, 2009
Sojourner Truth (Tennessee, USA)
I have mixed feelings about this grinder. I don't drink a lot of coffee -- one cup in the morning and a couple of small, demi-tasse cups at night. I buy small quantities of dark roasted beans from various sources and grind my own.

This grinder produces good ground coffee with consistent grind size whether you are grinding very coarse or very fine. I have heard some complaints that it doesn't grind finely enough for espresso but, as I'm not an espresson drinker, I can't comment on that.

What I can comment on is the BIG MESS that this grinder makes. The hopper that catches the ground coffee is plastic with a lid that has a small square hole in the center through which the ground coffee is supposed to fall. A good 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee misses the little hole and spills out all over the place when you pull out the reservoir to use the ground coffee. Also, the ground coffee reservoir is plastic and -- although they claim "anti-static technology" -- the grounds stick to the plastic reservoir by static action and, when you try to get ground coffee out of the grind reservoir, coffee grounds fly all over hell and back. I end up spilling enough coffee to make another one or two cups.

I'm planning to sell my Breville grinder on eBay and go back to my little handheld blade-type grinder that doesn't spill coffee everywhere.

excellent conical burr grinder. a little bulky and plastic container can cling to coffee grinds to make a mess, but the bottom line is that it produces excellent coffee. great value compared to what else is out there.

5 out of 5 stars Let me help you make the right decision re. burr grinders   December 31, 2008

(I'm trying to help alleviate the time you'll spend looking for the right product. My final analysis came down to this Breville and the Capresso 560.01)

I'll admit that I'm extremely anal retentive and review many possible options (within reason of course) before purchasing a product and consider a number of factors before making that decision. I finally settled on the Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder and it's everything that I expected and hoped it would be.

Do yourself a favor and pay a little more for a good product.

Compared to a all other similarly priced $100 burr grinders, this had the functionality that I was looking for in a grinder and easy to use. It has everything that a coffee/espresso drinker needs in a grinder at a solid price (there's a lot of junk out there in this price range, do not overpay for a piece of crapola). You don't need a myriad of settings people, just keep it simple.

I read too many reviews and came across a lot of silly commentary and a lot of drama that I advise you to ignore.
This product looks good, it's solid, less noisy than a blade grinder (it better be for triple the price), etc.

Right now I'm drinking a cup of starbucks espresso beans coffee and it is good!

Be sure to buy yourself a french press (Frieling Stainless Steel), you'll find yourself in coffee heaven.

3 out of 5 stars Not fine enough for espresso   December 30, 2008

I thought I was upgrading from my Baratza Maestro, but the Breville's finest setting just isn't as fine as the old one, so not good enough.

My old Maestro (5 years old) is stuck on espresso grind, cannot be changed - but it still grinds fine enough for our Ms. Sylvia by Rancilio.

Also, getting the coffee out is easier and neater with the Maestro.

If you have an expensive espresso maker, you might want to look elsewhere. This is fine for drip, press or other grinds. It looks nice, but as an espresso grinder, doesn't make the cut.

4 out of 5 stars Very good coffee grinder   December 25, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWF3ADJKDUGPQ First off I would give Amazon.com 5 stars for shipping. I ordered this
the Sunday before Christmas and it came via Fedex on Tuesday before Christmas. For the coffee grinder, it's really good. This is the third one I've owned, blade, basic burr, now this conical burr. It produces a consistent fine grind which is used for filter coffee makers. There is no static or mess, my previous grinder made a big mess every time I used it, main reason I wanted a new one. I would recommend this grinder to anyone.
