Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Leave the cleaning to a robot with this convenient machine. Its 14.4-volt rechargeable Ni-MH battery provides the power needed to clean hard floors, shop carpets, garage and basement areas, as well as industrial-floor surfaces. In addition, specially designed counter-rotating brushes spin almost 1,000 times per minute, sweeping up dirt and debris that cling to rough surfaces. Simply press the "clean" button and the unit sweeps under workbenches, cars, and other hard-to-reach places, picking up nuts, bolts, dirt, and more. For added convenience, "cliff" sensors keep it from falling down stairs or other vertical drops. The unit offers an oversized, bagless, easy-to-empty debris bin, and its power supply fully charges in seven hours. Accessories include a standard battery, a standard charger, a cleaning tool, and an owner's guide. The cleaning machine measures approximately 13 by 13 by 4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

2 out of 5 stars a disappointment   November 9, 2008

I bought a Dirt Dog to clean a large studio area (roughly 2,800 sqft) that is largely open space. I bought the home/dock device too.

Two things emerge: if the device doesn't hit a boundary after an, unspecified period of time it 'guesses' it's stuck and simply stops and beeps. Secondly, I'm disappointed that the Dirt Dog doesn't resume cleaning after recharging its battery. The home/dock is of little actual utility, other than the device returns to recharge itself instead of simply stopping in a discharged state. It's a cute but expensive accessory.

I gather that a new model has modes that enable it to calculate the room size and maximize the coverage-per-room based on information it receives through its sensors. This is said to enable the device to clean larger areas - such as open floor plans & it will apparently clean until the battery is almost depleted then it will return to its base for recharging. There is still no mention of what THEN happens...

All good stuff but it's disappointing that iRobot doesn't provide firmware updates for their products. A simple USB connection to a PC is all that it would take. For all the programmability that they espouse the product is pretty dumb and fixed. Product firmware updates and a facility for customerization are badly needed. I don't want to spend $500 on a new model for things the existing product should already be doing.

Finally, requiring the user to count the beeps is a really bad way for the device to communicate.

Clive McCarthy.

5 out of 5 stars I love the dog!   November 1, 2008

iRobot 1100 Dirt Dog Workshop Robot

I use the iRobot Dirt Dog every Saturday in my house! I bought it because I thought our house might have more traffic than the average and I wanted something that would be more durable. And it is!

We are really impressed with how much "stuff" it picks up. It has a large tray to hold the dust, hair, and other "stuff" it sweeps up. If you have a great amount of hair, I would recommend you invest in one of the iRobot Pet Cleaning models; they have rollers that don't wind the hair up.

My husband was not happy when I first ordered this and the Scooba. However, he was so excited about their efficiency that he even told his family about them. We both would highly recommend both products.

I would recommend you order this with the two year Appliance Replacement Warranty.

I've taken the Dirt Dog on a "Show & Tell" tour to family and friends. I let it start up and go in their livingrooms. Whether their floors are clean or not-so-clean, it always comes up with debris.

Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Cleans my carpets and floors, inside and outside   October 30, 2008

I have 5 kids and a 4000 sq ft house -- lots of laundry and housekeeping! Since I work part time, I was at the point of deciding to hire a maid to come twice a month, but I really didn't want to spend the money. I thought if I could just get something to help me with one of the major tasks, I'd be okay. It'd be better to spend a couple hundred dollars on iRobots, than to pay for someone else to do the floors only every two weeks.

After checking the Amazon reviews, I purchased a refurbished Scooba (mop) and was so happy with its performance that I decided to purchase the Dirt Dog, too. I chose it because it costs less than the other Roomba vacuums and actually seems to do more.

I'm happy to report that I have given Dirt Dog a thorough work out (for about 2 months now) and he has not failed. He cleans my tile, hardwood, carpets, and concrete patio. He goes and goes and goes. I have to pick up socks, cords, and fringed rugs (he's okay with unfringed rugs), and then he will keep going for over an hour and pick up everything in his path.

When I first set Dirt Dog loose, he picked up a lot of dust and bits of stuff that I didn't know was there -- he went under my furniture (which I do move occasionally) and found plenty of dust. I was amazed at what came out from under my son's bed -- YUCK! Now that Dirt Dog runs regularly, there's not as much for him to do, but he works diligently anyway.

Dirt Dog is not quiet, but he's no louder than any other vacuum cleaner (maybe even quieter because he's so close to the ground) and no louder than my kids. I don't mind the sound at all.

I have had to remove the sidebrush and clean the hair that tangled around it, but this is easily done with a screwdriver.

So far, I'm thrilled. I'll update this review if anything changes.

Dirt Dog does it all. Garage, kitchen, hallway, living room with short plush carpet. I am impressed.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive...   October 20, 2008

I've used it about a month - off and on.

I got it to clean the dog hair from the wood floors in the kitchen/dining room/hall/bathroom.

It seems to do a remarkably good job picking up stuff. My only complaint is that there are so many things on the floor (kitchen table and chairs, dining room table and chairs) that it spends a lot of time working around the edges there - and as such the battery doesn't last as long as I'd like it to.
