5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny   December 16, 2008
M. Jeroslow (Austin)
I actually bought the DC14 at Sears on sale, but after seeing the previous 1-star review I just had to put in my 2-cents. I have two dogs and a cat at my house, so keeping the place clean is not easy. Before I bought the DC14 I had a $75 Hoover vac which seemed to do a decent job. However, after using the DC14 I have now raised the bar on my expectations for a vacuum.

After vacuuming my entire house (rugs, carpets, tile floors) and emptying the canister about 10 times, I have come to the conclusion that this vacuum really sucks..in a very good way! There was so much fine dust and dog hair in the canister that I almost got sick thinking all of that was on my floors!

Ok, so now that I've established that the vacuum really works, here are the pro's and con's that I've been able to determine after one use:

Pros:
1. Extremely strong suction
2. Excellent accessories (for DC14 Complete series)- the floor tool does a great job of getting under furniture
3. No bags to buy
4. HEPA filter - only need to clean it every 3 months or so (do NOT need to replace)
5. 5-year warranty

Con's:
1. On/off button could have been placed in a better spot
2. A tad-bit heavy (just makes it a good exercise routine!)
3. Low clearance, so for larger object pick-up you have to raise the front a little
4. Slightly steeper than average learning curve for accessory use
5. Pricey, but somewhat offset because you will never have to buy bags or replacement filters
6. Have to empty canister when it fills, but I personally get a feeling of satisfaction every time I do it because I get to see what is NOT on my floor anymore!

I'm hoping that the DC14 will continue performing as it did the first time I used it. If so, it will truly be worth every penny!

1 out of 5 stars Awful Vacuum   May 1, 2008

I would not recommend this product to anyone. While it does have a few nice features, they cannot begin to compare to it's faults. I bought this a year ago, and am currently looking for a new vacuum. Here's the problems.

1. It's too heavy. My back aches whenever I use it. I've never had that problem with any other vacuum.
2. It's very loud. I have to wear earplugs. And it makes a horrible screeching noise when I put it on the carpet setting.
3. The on/off switch is in the middle of the vacuum, so that when I'm using the hose and try to repostion the vacuum, I end up turning it off repeatedly. It's very annoying.
4. While it does have good suction, it's design is such that it doesn't pick up large items such as dog food. It just rolls them on the floor. To pick them up, you have to tilt the vacuum up on one side to get the item directly underneath the rollers. Part of why my back hurts. Plus the suction can be too strong and has damaged my carpet in places.
5. The design is too bulky so that you can't get it to vacuum adequately around the toe kicks on your cabinets, around the edges of most furniture and the walls. I have to go over each floor twice to get a thorough cleaning - once with without attachments and once with attachments - because there are too many areas that the Dyson just can't reach. This means it takes twice as long to vacuum as normal.
6. I dread using this Dyson so much that I actually go longer between each cleaning, so my house it dirtier than before. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of the product.

There are many other problems, but these are the main ones. The only thing I like about this Dyson is the ease of emptying it, but I'd go back to changing bags in a heartbeat rather than deal with all these other problems. I think the engineers at Dyson need to have real people test their products and in real settings. I will never buy another Dyson until they do.
