Amazon.com Review A great gift for the newlywed or college graduate setting up their first apartment, this eight-piece set contains almost every knife needed for most everyday uses, including a 3-1/2 inch paring knife for trimming, peeling, and dicing fruits and vegetables; a six-inch utility/boning knife for trimming fat, deboning chicken, and performing other delicate tasks; an eight-inch slicer to carve roast meats and poultry; and a 7-1/2-inch chef's knife for all-purpose tasks from mincing garlic to chopping vegetables. Rounding out the set are four steak knives, indispensable for slicing and properly presenting everyone's favorite cut of meat, an eight-inch sharpening steel, and an attractive hardwood storage block to store and protect the knives. Chicago Cutlery's Metropolitan line of knives makes an affordable introduction to high-quality kitchen cutlery. Stamped rather than forged for lighter weight and a more reasonable price, the blades are made from high-carbon stainless steel for rust and stain resistance and longer-lasting sharpness. Chicago's exclusive Taper Grind edge produces impressively precise slices and retains its sharpness well over time; these knives will need to be re-sharpened regularly, but they take an edge beautifully and with regular maintenance can stay out-of-the-box sharp for years. A full tang extends from the tip of the knife to the end of the handle for improved balance and strength. Contoured, ergonomically designed polymer handles feature contemporary styling and are durable and non-porous, so they're impervious to water and bacteria for increased food safety. Triple brass rivets secure the handle to the blade for extra stability. Chicago Cutlery covers their knives with a lifetime guarantee; they recommend hand-washing and drying for best result.--Mary Park What's in the Box 3-1/2-inch paring knife, 6-inch utility/boning knife, 8-inch slicer, 7-1/2-inch chef's knife, 4 steak knives, 8-inch sharpening steel, 9-slot storage block.

Chicago Cutlery March 22, 2008 P. Patterson (Wisconsin) Selected product based on a review by Consumer's Reports. I'm very pleased with the item especially considering the low price from the vendor. It's great to have sharp knives in the house even if I'm not Dexter.
Sharp, cheap, but not pretty February 14, 2008 Plotinus (Atlanta, Ga, USA) None of your snobbish friends are going to be impressed with this knife set, but I have to say, these things will cut stuff up. I agree with other reviewers that this is one of those "best buy" type of products. They're nto fancy, they don't have the "right" brand, and frankly the blades look kind of skinny and wimpy, but the performance of these knives is just great. I have not owned them long enough to know how long they will hold an edge, or what kind of trouble it will be to keep them sharp, but my first impression is that at this price, this is a very, very good, utilitarian set of blades for the kitchen. This is the first set of "stamped" (skinny) knives I've used, and I can tell you that the whole argument that a quality knife has to have a lot of "heft" may very well be advertising hype.
Buyer Beware, NOT the real deal!!!! January 18, 2008 Victoria L. Mayes (Seminole, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 10-Piece Block Set I own a couple of piece of Metropolitan Chicago Cutlery that I enjoy using, so I ordered this set for myself and one as a gift. The knives that arrived were not of the quality I expected, nor of the quality pictured in the brochure included in the packaging. They were too light, and the handles were just stuck on, not incorporated into the blade like the Metropolitan pieces I already own. I sent the first set back for a replacement and got the same poor quality bogus knives back again, so I just returned them for a refund. Amazon made the return painless, but I would have liked to have gotten the knives that were advertised, rather than a cheap imitation. Be Careful!
These knives are a very good value. November 14, 2007 K. Smith (Nebraska) For the price you would be very hard pressed to find a better set of knives than these. They are not the highest quality, but the price is right and they will do the job. Regarding the CR rating and dishwashing: Don't put your knives in the dishwasher. It doesn't matter what the box says. CR even says this in their article. It's not that difficult to wipe your knives down and dry them immediately after use. Just get into the habit.
Good knife set, just a few caveats September 10, 2007 Bobby D (az, us) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been using these knives for several months, and I enjoy using them. Just be aware that they are NOT made of stainless steel, as is almost every knife in the world is made of today. For some reason, the immediate universe of knife manufacturing, decided to switch over to stainless steel. I don't like stainless steel. It doesn't seem to hold an edge as long as carbon steel and stainless takes a bit more effort to sharpen. Just my humble opinion. Carbon steel does rust, but I wash all of these knives by hand and immediately wipe them dry. No problem. I never need to oil. I am not a big fan of machine washing any knife. It is tough to seat them in the racks so they will not rub against something and the amount of heat used to dry does a number on the hardware holding the handles on. My only gripe is that the blades are fairly thin and don't have a lot of heft to them. Otherwise, they work well. Good but not exceptional. Hope that helps.
