Product Description What doorchestra drummers and bakers have in common? Vic Firth tools of course! Vic Firth was a timpanist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for nearly fifty years. For the past thirty-five years he has turned his attention to manufacturing the finest drumstick in the world. In keeping with his exacting standards, the same woodturning expertise is now being employed to produce peppermills and salt mills of the highest quality. More recently he has turned his attention to rolling pins. This lightweight pin is the preferred tool for chefs when it comes to rolling out thin pie crusts. It's tapered from the middle out to both ends, allowing easy rotation of the pin around the dough for rolling out perfect circles.
Amazon.com Review Rolling out proper pie crusts that are both tender and flaky is a snap with this pin. Tapered from the middle to both ends, it rolls out dough thinly by pushing it from the middle. And it rotates easily around the dough for making perfect circles--a virtue for pizzas, also. It's unfinished so that, over time, flour penetrates the wood's pores--making the pin less sticky than finished pins. --Fred Brack

more taper than I really needed December 16, 2008 D. Ting (Boston, MA) I got this rolling pin to replace my old cylindrical pin, which had wobbly handles. I figured a pin that was made of a single piece of wood would be sturdier and easier to control. In practice tho, the steep taper makes it much more sensitive and more difficult to control, so it's actually harder to get an even thickness. The small diameter (less than 2 inches) doesn't help either. Maybe if you're working with very hard and difficult to shape dough this would be a good pin to use, but then I'd probably want something heavier. Overall it's a functional but awkward pin.
A must have kitchen tool December 14, 2008 €ricket (Seattle, Wa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased the Maple Bakery Rolling Pin and I love it!! The weight is just right, coming in at about 22 ounces according to my kitchen scale. It is 20 inches long and uniform in shape. I have never been good at rolling out pie dough, but this made me feel like a pro. The clean up was easy to, just a quick wipe down with warm water and it's ready for next time. A great deal on this item and even more so if you purchase it on the 4-for-3 promotion.
Perfect for pie dough October 13, 2008 FoodieDuo (Washington, DC) This rolling pin is a great addition to my baking tools. It makes rolling out pie dough a snap. It is so easy to maneuver and gives you better control than a standard rolling pin.
Bakery pin: perfect for everyone October 13, 2008 Melissa M. Bondi (Arlington, VA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
On the current Amazon page, three Vic Firth rolling pin models are listed together -- this review is for the bakery pin, which is about 20" long and of uniform width, without separate handles. I wanted to mention one thing explicitly that I hadn't seen in other reviews -- this is a great rolling pin for all hand sizes and strengths. If you have arthritis or a hard time gripping handles, this rolls nicely under the palm & fingers with plenty of room for your 12" dough in between. If you have large hands, the wide ends are much more comfortable to hold than the narrow, tapered ends of a French pin. Kids can get leverage on it, since there's no spinning handle axle or specialized technique required. Everyone in my family can use this rolling pin and get excellent results. That, to me, is a terrific feature. And yes, like everyone else has said, it provides great control, is effortless to maneuver, and really attractive. It's easy to clean, and needs no more attention than your butcher block; just condition with a little oil occasionally, and don't soak it in water for long periods of time.
Good French Rolling Pin August 3, 2008 Ashley E. Cox (Atsugi, Japan) If you like French Rolling Pins, this one is pretty good. It arrived quickly and is exactly what I expected.
