Pairs well with natural salt mill, but label is tacky. November 10, 2008

I bought this together with the Peugeot Paris Salt Mill 7-Inch, Natural. They are perfectly matched in shape and size, and the woods go reasonably well together. I was surprised to find the mill even came with a few peppercorns in it, so I got to start using it right away. It has a good grinding mechanism, though it's a little ornery when it's almost empty.
But the reason I can't give this mill a fifth star: There is this tacky-looking black P on the brass finial. The S on the paired salt mill came off with a little nail polish remover, but the P was more stubborn. We tried a few different chemicals that had no effect. Finally, we took some superfine sand paper and scraped it off. Obviously this also removed the polished finish from the top. But we sanded it evenly across the top and sort of circularly, so it almost looks intentional. And it certainly looks better than the P.

I bought this pepper grinder thinking it would be incredible coming from a brand like Peugeot. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The size and shape are convenient and pretty to look at but the grinder simply does not grind well. Filled with peppercorns completely full, half full or with just a handful : ground with the grinder vertical, tipped slightly or horizontal : a grind and a shake, tapping, an insane number of adjustments to the grind mechanism, a sprinkling of holy water or outright begging - nothing makes this pepper grinder produce even a scant amount of freshly ground pepper. After months of aggravation, (and becoming acquainted with Amazon's terrible return policy on this item), I purchased the Unicorn Magnum Plus which was recommended by America's Test Kitchen. I'm hard to please and the Unicorn is downright heavenly with a huge fill, smooth, easy usage and dare I say it, the darn thing makes almost too much freshly ground pepper - a problem I'll happily contend with. Don't buy this Peugeot piece of junk - it's terrible.

I've had the Peugeot 7" Paris Salt and Pepper mills for several months now and really love them. They're very attractive and the fit and finish are impeccable. They also produce a lot of uniformly ground product quickly. The one complaint I, and others apparently, had is the adjustment drift. If you just grab the top and twist back and forth the adjustment screw will quickly work it's way off. The solution is simple and automatic once you practice it. When you grab the top make sure your hand also presses down on the adjustment screw locking it in place. I usually grab the top and the screw and turn the body back and forth keeping the adjustment where I put it. You can legitimately argue this shouldn't be necessary on what is supposed to be a high end product but remember the design is over 150 years old.

I bought these hoping they would grind well.They do work great.Just turn them one way or the other not both ways at once.Looks like they'll last.I'm very happy i got mine.Real good salt mills.

Got this for a great deal, under $20.00. Received the Pepper mill as a wedding present so we needed to complete the pair. Works great like a Peugeot should!
