Pricey, but effective December 1, 2008 Veggiechiliqueen For years, I'd struggled with heaving pots of boiling water to the sink and attempting to dump the contents into a colander, where the backwash of hot water would inevitably flood whatever I was cooking and end up splashing me in the process. Last year I ended up purchasing the Oxo convertible colander, which is a lifesaver (that, and buy a pasta pot). It has foldable legs that extend to fit over the edges of your sink, holding the colander in place so you can keep both hands on the pot of boiling water. The holes wrap around the sides and the bottom, so your contents drain evenly. When you're finished, the legs simply fold down and you can slide the colander onto a shelf for easy storage (it's also a great place to stash frequently used baking / cook's tools such as mini pastry rollers and tartlette pans). This is definitely one of the handiest, best-designed kitchen tools I own.
Not worth the money November 8, 2007 H. McClure 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For $25, I expected something that would last more than a year. Got this for Christmas last year, and one of the handles broke completely off a few weeks ago (October). Do yourself a favor and buy a different product. Follow up: Two days after I posted this review, the other handle fell off. I won't be buying from this company again.
Great colander September 14, 2007 Susan Darnell (El Paso, TX USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Easy to use, easy to clean. The legs spring out easily to hang over a large sink. Large oblong design makes rinsing fruit and draining pasta a breeze.
Garbage September 2, 2007 orangekay (San Francisco, CA United States) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Aside from the fact that the holes are too small and too few to actually drain any food effectively, the handles are very cheaply made; mine broke after about a week. Inside those black plastic pieces screwed into the bowl is nothing but a single, sharp rod of spring steel that is wedged up into some plastic cams on either side of the handle's hinges. These plastic cams cannot stand up to the pressure being exerted upon them by the spring and understandably shear right off with little provocation, leaving you with handles that flop all over the place. If it had cost $5 I probably wouldn't care, but $30 for a colander is a little pricey by any standard. I attempted to contact Oxo's customer service department with this problem, and they simply told me to contact their customer service department. If this makes any sense to you, there might just be a job for you at Oxo headquarters in Texas. Duties include sending a lot of generic form letters in response to complaints you didn't read and never answering the phone.
Cool to use and to look at September 1, 2007 C. Finley (nc) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A nice piece of engineering and nice to look at. A pleasure to own and use.
