Not flawless, but works fine November 25, 2008 John Wismar (Collierville, TN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Buying a coffee maker is not straightforward. I read a ton of reviews of many different models when our older coffee maker (a now-discontinued Starbucks Barista model) finally died. I did not see a single coffee maker that had uniformly positive reviews, and I also didn't find one that had every feature we were looking for. We decided to give this one a shot; all of the negative reviews made us pretty skeptical, but so far it has been working well for us. We were looking for a coffee maker that (in no particular order) A) used a thermal carafe instead of a hot plate, B) had a removeable reservoir for convenient filling, C) made good coffee, D) wasn't extremely expensive, E) was a solid, well made device with positive customer reviews. How does this coffee maker rate on those criteria? A) Thermal carafe: check. B) Removable reservoir: missing. We have to bring a pitcher over and fill the reservoir. This is inconvenient, and we, like others, have encountered the issue where we can get air bubbles in the fill-level indicator. I can usually tap these out during the next fill cycle, but it's annoying. This has happened 3 times in the 2 months we've had it. To be fair, almost no other model of coffee maker we looked at in this price range had a removable reservoir, either. C) Makes good coffee: check. We had read a comparison review in Cook's Illustrated that indicated that this coffee maker was one of the better ones they tested in terms of coffee quality. That prompted us to look at this model more closely, and we've been happy with the coffee it produces, even when brewing only half a pot. D) Not extremely expensive: not too bad. This is subjective, of course. It's a good bit more expensive than the $20 Mr. Coffee, but less than many others. We would have liked to spend a bit less, but weren't horrified. E) Solid build: mixed. As I indicated, we've seen a couple of the problems others have mentioned, but nothing major. We haven't had any leaks, for example. (One other issue: the "Cycle Completed" beep is the most annoying beep of any device we own. Holy moly, is it awful. Fortunately, you can turn it off; save your users manual.) So, over all, after a couple of months of daily use, I'd say we have been fairly pleased with it. It's not flawless, but it hasn't caused us any major problems. I hope by the time we're buying another one that there will be models out that have uniformly positive reviews, but in the meantime, we're happy with this one.
Terrible coffee maker November 21, 2008 Stephen M. Broderick (Wadmalaw Island, SC USA) This is my second Krups and my last. I've had it 4 months and the water brew temperature is about 160 degrees, which makes a lousy cup of coffee. I use only filtered or distilled water so there shouldn't be any build-up on the heating elements, but I decalcified it anyway and still can't raise the temp. I give it one star because it fits under my cabinets, otherwise it's a piece of junk. And a guy can't get his hand in the carafe to clean it.
Don't Waste Your Money November 6, 2008 Zen and Now Do not buy this machine. The basket that holds grinds swings open, resovoir is unreliable to show how much water is in it.
Like the design, hate the coffee October 27, 2008 filmz (Golden, CO) I bought this coffeemaker because my glass carafe from my Braun AromaDeluxe coffeemaker broke. Since a new carafe was over 25.00 I figured I might as well buy a new coffeemaker to go with my other chrome appliances. i also figured a thermal carafe would be less likely to break and wouldnt need replacement. I made several cups of coffee so far and here is my impression. When brewing, I didn't get that great smell of morning coffee. Instead, all I could smell was plastic heating up. The ohter annoying thing is the water gauge on the side. I had filled it up and turned it on (I believe the water level read about 5 cups). The coffee would not begin brewing and instead kept beeping. It was not recognizing that water was in the reservoir. You are also supposed to pull the water filter out before adding water. The coffee was not hot immediately after brewing. It was just warm. I was expecting SO much more, esp since this was more expensive than my last coffeemaker. I am returning this and just ended up buying a glass carafe for my Braun. I am so disappointed but am getting my money back. The negative reviews on here are true. I wish I read them before buying it is a cheap piece of junk that smells like plastic and brews lukewarm coffee.
Junk October 22, 2008 C. G. Cisneros Bought my first Krups at a Bed Bath and Beyond. Had it ~a month when suddenly the water that I poured into the reservoir came right out the bottom. Took it back and the nice people there allowed me to exchange it for a new one. My second one lasted a week. It continued to indicate that the reservoir was empty when in fact was full. It will not brew if the sensor believes that there is not any water in the reservoir. On the plus side, the thermal coffee pot is great. It will keep the coffee hot for hours without cooking it. I will have to buy another brand with a thermal coffee pot. I will never buy another Krups anything.
