Almost Good January 10, 2008 Reviewer 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was looking for something that would keep water near boiling temperatures for several hours. This wasn't it. Maybe a "hot pot" is what I want. This kettle will rapidly boil a pot of water and keep it at a rolling boil until all the water boils out in about one hour. There is built in protection that turns the pot off when all the water is gone. If the pot is filled completely, it initially splashes some of the boiling water out the spout. Also has a rather short cord. Simple design, so there isn't much that can break. The kettle uses 1000 watts which is standard for these, but seems like a lot when I consider my microwave also uses 1000 watts. Makes lots of steam. Very impressive but not what I wanted.
An unwatched pot... September 20, 2007 K. Bolinsky (Mississippi) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this kettle because I'm impatient. My original electric kettle was in good working order, but it took such a long time to reach a boil that I all-too-frequently wandered away and forgot it until it had boiled nearly dry! I decided that a whistling kettle was the answer. What I didn't expect, though, is how very long it takes the West Bend kettle to boil two cups of water. I know that such things are relative, but I started the kettle, walked the length of my house, connected to Amazon, and wrote (NOW) this review before hearing the kettle whistle -- the "now" indicates the sound of the whistle. Claims that this kettle is "faster than a microwave" are false -- my 1K Watt microwave boils two cups of water in 90 seconds. The West Bend kettle seems well-built and does what it claims to do: It boils up to a quart of water and it whistles.
Takes longer to heat less water April 23, 2007 L. Capell (Peachtree City, GA USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I had an electric tea kettle for 10 years that I loved. This kettle has two things that I really like that it didn't have: a whistle and it stays cool to the touch. However, it takes longer to heat than the one I previously had and yet holds less water. I am a little disappointed in its efficiency.
only electric teapot with whistle I could find January 11, 2007 L. barker 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This was a replacement for the one I had for 5 years. The old one started to leak. This is just as fast and I love that it whistles. When I'm busy in another part of the house, this feature can be very important. Great for an easily distracted person. The delivery was quick BUT the outside box came with a very large hole from shipping which extended to the inner box, which also had a hole. I was pleased that it didn't have any effect on the product itself because I was in the need of a cup of tea by then.
Great for a while November 10, 2006 S. Eller (North Carolina) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've had two of these kettles and like the design, the whistle, and the quickness with which it heats. However, both kettles eventually began to leak after a couple of years. If you buy one, I suggest making sure you pour out any remaining water once you've used it, and don't accidentally overfill. I am not sure which caused my leakage, but I'm buying another electric kettle of a different brand this time. Still for the price, I've been very happy with this kettle. It's lasted a long time, and I can afford to replace it when it's worn out.
