The BODUM?? Ottoni Electric Water Kettle is an offshoot of the original Ottoni Stovetop Kettle initially produced by BODUM?? in 1986. The Electric OTTONI is fully automatic, providing all the comfort and advantages of an electric water kettle. In designing the Electric Ottoni, BODUM?? kept the playful post-modernistic look of the original stovetop version and utilized most of the materials previously used, such as stainless steel and plastic, while adding a new handle made of plastic.To minimize energy consumption, the Ottoni???s stainless steel heating element is concealed underneath a stainless steel plate to maximize the surface contact between the hot metal and the water. The auto shut-off feature insures that the Ottoni is switched off when the water boils or if the heating element overheats. This protects the kettle from damage and indicates a high safety standard. BODUM?? is sensitive to people???s need for safe products. BODUM?? has integrated a removable scale filter in the spout that retains calcium deposits and prevents water from being tainted. In addition, the Electric Ottoni is cordless, reducing the risk of the unit becoming entangled in the cord. An indicator on top shows the maximum capacity of 1.5l/51oz.

I can hardly believe I'm actually seeing this kettle for sale finally.
Bodum ran an ad in U.S. magazines literally 2-3 years ago introducing this and then couldn't supply the product in the U.S. for some reason for years after, so I'd about given up on ever really seeing it for sale.
If you like the looks of this, great. Go for it. But keep in mind it's hard to keep clean and scratches very easily. You definitely want to clean it only with dishsoap and water and then rinse it off. Don't use cleaners that are abrasive at all, and keep it away from the stove so a film of grease or splatters don't get on it.
The very best kettle I've ever found is the Richard Sapper-designed "Harmonica" kettle made by Alessi (do a google search for "Alessi Sapper Kettle" or "Alessi 9091 Kettle." (And if you decide to buy do a search with Google Shopping and you'll find it for a seriously discounted price/the best price [sort to get lowest price available].) The reason the Alessi 9091 kettle is my favorite is it's easy to keep clean, doesn't scratch if you don't use an abrasive cleaner, and -- the main reason -- the base insert is thick copper and heats your water very quickly (unlike this Bodum Ottoni in the non-electric version that takes forever to boil water, just like those slow, slow, slow [but nice looking] OXO kettles). I just don't want to wait that long, so for me the copper insert in the Alessi is key.
(They also make a version with a steel insert for convection ovens that's available at unicahome . com and other sites.)
I've had the Alessi 9091 "Harmonica" kettle since the early 1980s and have only now (2008) finally replaced it with the same model. It's that good/functions that well, so I won't look at any other.
For me I want a kettle that boils fast and that's the Alessi 9091.

I'm all for form and function, but boiling water for a good cup of tea is not justification enough for a $180 electric kettle with a blue knob on it. I own this (a gift), and it performs well...as well as my 5-year old Braun kettle. Bodum in general makes great products, and this kettle is no exception. It boils water quickly, with no spillage. But:
- Keeping it clean (the stainless steel finish shows the slightest fingerprint) makes it more bother than it's worth.
- It's heavier than most kettles. Filled with 1.7L of water, it weighs about 6 pounds, making it difficult for some people to neatly pour from it.
-The cord is a bit short and higher gage (wire is too thin) than I would prefer.
