2 out of 5 stars 3 of 8 broke in first year   January 4, 2009

3 of 8 of these glasses broke in first year of normal use.

very dangerous glasses.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Idea, the Style, the Look   January 1, 2009

These glasses are great. They're the most attractive ones I've ever used. This size (9 oz.) is great for coffee, and the show they reveal as the espresso machine is brewing each cup is interesting to say the least. The cups are sturdy, and they work perfectly as insulators against heat and table damage. I love that they don't need handles, so they're very sleek. I do have one problem in that the second set I ordered was about 1/4" shorter than the first, but the volume is still the same, so no stars off for that. I would forgive them worse than that but don't have to.

1 out of 5 stars Way too fragile   December 29, 2008

This is for the Bodum Pavina Double-Wall Thermo Glasses 15 oz.
The cool factor is undeniable, but please don't get sucked into it, as these things have the thinnest glass walls I have ever seen. I picked up a set of two, and out of the box I saw that one should have wound up in the same place they put three armed sweaters and other "seconds". Bubbles in the glass and the top had a wobble in the circumference so it wasn't quite flat. But I kept them 'cause they were cool.
I was using the good one and it got knocked over on the table and broke into a million pieces. I have broken my share of wine glasses, but this was exceptional.
For my twenty bucks, I have seconds quality glass that I don't see making it to the spring and a pile of glass fragments.
These are certainly not stronger than "normal" glass.
Maybe I got a bad batch...YMMV

4 out of 5 stars Functional But Dainty   December 26, 2008
Michael F. Braddock (OC, Cali)
All other reviewers have accurately recapped the functionality of these glasses and I am greatly enjoying the "no condensation" feature. The vaunted lightweight-ness of the glass make for a certain awkwardness in use (at least until you get used to them). I had a rather delicate decanter and am using these to compliment it.... all are on a glass tray and, to say the truth, the set was quickly reduced to a visual tableau rather than a daily user!

4 out of 5 stars Expensive but nice   December 23, 2008

These are great glasses! I really enjoy drinking coffee from them (the 12 oz. ones). In fact, I've got one in my hand now.

They fall short of five stars for me mainly because I'm not sure how long they'll last. One of the glasses in my first set arrived shattered, which wasn't a good sign. However, in playing around with the pieces I found that the outer portion of the glass is surprisingly strong. I whacked it hard four or five times with a metal pen and didn't manage to even crack it. The inner wall of the glass seems much more delicate. That's where the breakage had occurred.

When my replacement set arrived (thanks, Amazon), both of these glasses were significantly heavier overall and had thicker lips (where you drink from). They were also about half a centimeter taller. I like the feel of these in my hand better than the original glasses I received. I know that since they're mouth-blown there's bound to be some variation in thickness, shape, etc., but this didn't seem random. The two replacement 12 oz. glasses were identical to each other, and both were different from the original 12 oz. glasses in the same way (heavier, taller). I have to wonder if at some point Bodum decided to beef up their double-layer glassware. Which version will you get if you order these? There's no way to know. Maybe my experience was just a fluke.

A tangential note about shipping: My replacement glasses were sent via a courier service (A1 International), probably because Amazon rushed the replacement order with Christmas coming up. The courier service is well-run, but they didn't arrive until 8:45 p.m. on the day of delivery. Luckily I'd read complaints about Amazon's couriers in the past, so when I saw A1 listed as the shipping company I looked up their phone number and called them to leave my cell phone number with dispatch. If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't have received the replacement package that day since A1 arrived after the front desk had closed and they would have had no way of reaching me. In my opinion, if Amazon is going to use couriers, they should either stress that delivery has to be during normal business hours or request permission to provide after-hours contact information to the courier. Otherwise what's the point of rushing an order? This has no bearing on how many stars I gave the glasses, but I thought other people might find the info. useful.
